New Dog Park opens Palmer Park!

The Palmer Park Dog Park opened on National Dog Day, Aug. 26, 2023. It is open everyday from 8 am-10 pm (or sunrise through sunset). The Palmer Park Unleashed Dog Park Committee (PPU) is comprised of members of numerous neighborhoods surrounding and near Palmer Park. PPU is an ad-hoc committee of People for Palmer Park, and partner with the City of Detroit and the general canine-loving community. It was formed to help create a Dog Park in Palmer Park. We meet regularly on Zoom. Email us for the link to join us!

Our special events and community engagement programs are supported by The Kresge Foundation and KIP:D+ partners, Michigan Community Resources and Co.act Detroit.

Dog Park Survey Results

The new Palmer Park Dog Park was built by the City of Detroit during the spring and summer of 2023 in a location just south of Seven Mile Road, west of the 12 Precinct Detroit Police Station and east of Pontchartrain Drive. This was described in the 2022 community survey as Option #1.

The City of Detroit, in conjunction with People for Palmer Park/Palmer Park Unleashed Task Force, held a survey for the new Palmer Park Dog Park from September 10-30, 2022.

The survey provided participants with the opportunity to vote on two proposed locations for the new park. In total, 554 respondents participated in the survey. Nearly 80 percent of the respondents were from the Detroit area (as self-reported by zip code).

  • 79% ALL respondents were Detroit residents

  • 57% ALL respondents live within 1 mile of Palmer Park

  • 52% of ALL respondents chose Option 1

  • 61% of DETROITERS Chose Option 1, which is located west of the 12th Precinct Police Station and the new bandshell from the State Fairgrounds and east of Pontchartrain and 7 mile.
